ARTIST’s MINI-BIO
Ivette Román-Roberto is an accomplished voice experimentalist and community artist with a wealth of experience performing on international stages. She was a founding member of the “Performeros” generation of the 90s in Puerto Rico and has performed at numerous prestigious events, including the Bienal de Poesía Visual-Chopo Museum, Sia/Poesia Biennial of Bologna, Bâtie Festival of Genève, and the NYU’s Hemispheric Institute encounters at Lima, Perú, and Monterrey, Mexico. Since settling in Houston, Texas, in 2005, Ivette has been an active member of the arts community. She has collaborated with Nameless Sound, served as a member of the Artist Advisory Committee of Diverse Works, and is a founding member of the Collective of Puerto Ricans in Houston. Ivette has also participated in the Coalition Power 4 Puerto Rico, advocating for the rights and well-being of the Puerto Rican community. In 2015, Ivette launched RÉQUIEM, a lab-based community singing project aimed at providing a safe and supportive space for Puerto Ricans. The first RÉQUIEM show was on the Island with a community that was mourning the loss of members of the LGBTT community in hate crimes. After Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic, she has directed RÉQUIEM with other groups, addressing the theme of loss due to climate catastrophes, migration, and the pandemic, with support from various organizations, including the National Performance Network through MECA@TBH and the Ford Foundation through the Puerto Contemporary Museum. Currently, Ivette is part of the 2023 cohorts of Artist INC/Fresh Arts sponsored by the Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. With her wealth of experience, Ivette continues to use experimental voice techniques as a means of community healing and artistic expression.
STATEMENT
“Over the course of my art career, my voice work has undergone a slow but consistent change. I started out with a strongly performative style, but gradually moved towards a more minimalist approach. Despite this evolution, there has always been a continuous unresolved tension in my work. This tension is rooted in my desire to challenge the colonial programming that I inherited through my upbringing, while also maintaining a deep reverence for certain aspects of that programming.
While this tension can be difficult to navigate at times, I believe that it has also been a source of growth and evolution in my work. My voice is my primary art venue – it’s the space I create for myself within the art world. Through voice improvisation, I’m able to access a place where there are no limitations. It’s a place where I can be the person I always wanted to be, free from the script of discrimination that so often dominates our lives.
Although I don’t consider myself a teacher or a director, I do see myself as an elder of the village. I want to share the wisdom that I’ve gained through my own journey and to observe others as they navigate their own creative process. Ultimately, I hope that my work can serve as a source of inspiration and healing for others, as well as for myself.”

MINI-BIO DE LA ARTISTA
Ivette Román-Roberto es una experimentada artista vocal y comunitaria con una amplia experiencia en actuaciones en escenarios internacionales. Fue miembro fundador de la generación “Performeros” de los años 90 en Puerto Rico y ha actuado en numerosos eventos prestigiosos, incluyendo la Bienal de Poesía Visual del Museo Chopo, la Bienal de Poesía Sia/Poesia de Bolonia, el Festival Bâtie de Ginebra y los encuentros del Hemispheric Institute de la NYU en Lima, Perú y Monterrey, México.
Desde que se estableció en Houston, Texas, en 2005, Ivette ha sido miembro activo de la comunidad artística. Ha colaborado con Nameless Sound, ha sido miembro del Comité Asesor de Artistas de Diverse Works y es miembro fundador del Colectivo de Puertorriqueños en Houston. Ivette también ha participado en la Coalición Power 4 Puerto Rico, abogando por los derechos y el bienestar de la comunidad puertorriqueña.
En 2005, Ivette lanzó RÉQUIEM, un proyecto de canto comunitario basado en laboratorio que tenía como objetivo proporcionar un espacio seguro y de apoyo para los puertorriqueños. El primer espectáculo de RÉQUIEM se realizó en la isla, con una comunidad que estaba de luto por la pérdida de miembros de la comunidad LGBTT en crímenes de odio. Después del huracán María y la pandemia de COVID-19, dirigió RÉQUIEM con otros grupos, abordando los temas de la pérdida debido a las catástrofes climáticas, la migración y la pandemia, con el apoyo de varias organizaciones, incluyendo la Red Nacional de Actuación a través de MECA@TBH y la Fundación Ford a través del Museo Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico.
Actualmente, Ivette forma parte de la cohorte 2023 de Artist INC/Fresh Arts, patrocinado por la Mid-America Arts Alliance y la Asociación Nacional de Artes y Culturas Latinas. Con su amplia experiencia, Ivette continúa utilizando técnicas vocales experimentales como medio de curación comunitaria y expresión artística.
DECLARACIÓN DE LA ARTISTA
“A lo largo de mi carrera artística, mi trabajo vocal ha experimentado un cambio lento pero constante. Comencé con un estilo altamente performativo, pero gradualmente me moví hacia un enfoque más minimalista. A pesar de esta evolución, siempre ha habido una tensión continua e irresuelta en mi trabajo. Esta tensión está arraigada en mi deseo de desafiar la programación colonial que heredé a través de mi educación, al mismo tiempo que mantengo una profunda reverencia por ciertos aspectos de esa programación.
Aunque esta tensión puede ser difícil de navegar a veces, creo que también ha sido una fuente de crecimiento y evolución en mi trabajo. Mi voz es mi principal espacio artístico, es el espacio que creo para mí misma dentro del mundo del arte. A través de la improvisación vocal, puedo acceder a un lugar donde no hay limitaciones. Es un lugar donde puedo ser la persona que siempre quise ser, libre del guion de la discriminación que a menudo domina nuestras vidas.
Aunque no me considero una maestra o una directora, me veo a mí misma como una anciana de la aldea. Quiero compartir la sabiduría que he adquirido a través de mi propio camino y observar a otros mientras navegan su propio proceso creativo. En última instancia, espero que mi trabajo pueda servir como fuente de inspiración y curación para otros, así como para mí misma.”
